Tanzania has a tropical climate, with temperatures typically ranging between 22°C and 31°C throughout the year. The country experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season.
Dry Season (June to October)
The dry season runs from June to October and is considered the peak travel period. During this time, the weather is mostly clear, sunny, and comfortable.
These conditions are ideal for safaris, as wildlife tends to gather around water sources, making animals easier to spot. With minimal rainfall and pleasant temperatures, this is the most popular time for game viewing and outdoor activities.
Wet Season (November to May)
The wet season lasts from November to May and includes both the short rains and the long rains.
Although this period sees fewer visitors, it offers unique advantages. The landscapes become lush and vibrant, creating excellent conditions for photography. Parks are less crowded, and birdlife is especially abundant. Rainfall can vary from light showers to heavier downpours, but it rarely affects activities for extended periods.
Regional Climate Differences
Northern Parks
The northern safari circuit, including Serengeti National Park and Tarangire National Park, generally experiences a moderate climate. Rainfall peaks around April but is usually less intense compared to surrounding areas.
The Ngorongoro Crater, located at approximately 2,300 meters (7,545 feet) above sea level, receives higher rainfall and can be quite cool, especially during early mornings and evenings.
Arusha City
Arusha serves as the main gateway to the northern safari circuit. Surrounded by the scenic beauty of Mount Meru, the city enjoys relatively mild and pleasant weather, making it a comfortable starting or ending point for most safari itineraries.
Southern Circuit Parks
Parks in the southern circuit—such as Nyerere National Park, Mikumi National Park, and Ruaha National Park—tend to be warmer due to their lower altitudes. These regions offer a more remote and less crowded safari experience.
